United States Federal Government Rules That Federal Government’s Turnbacks of Asylum Seekers at Southern Border Ports of Entry are Unlawful

On September 2, 2021 a United States District Court held that the U.S. government’s turnback of thousands of asylum seekers and denial of access to the asylum process at the U.S.-Mexico border is unlawful.

Federal District Court judge Cynthia Bashant ruled that United States Customs and Border Protection is required by law to inspect and process asylum seekers upon arrival at ports of entry and refer them for interviews.
